Historical Perspectives: In Honor Of John Glenn, The First American To Orbit The Earth (And A Recollection Of The Heuer On His Wrist)
What many may not know is that he did as such with a watch lashed to his wrist – however that doesn’t mean it was a wristwatch. No, John Glenn circled the earth accompanied by a Heuer stopwatch, on his milestone trip on Mercury-Atlas 6, in a vessel named Friendship 7, in 1962. The past two Mercury flights were sub-orbital, and Glenn was the main space explorer to really accomplish earth orbit.
Indeed, the primary Swiss watch to make it into space was not an Omega or even a Breitling, it was a Heuer – model 2915A, a stopwatch. This was not a well established reality for a long time after Glenn got back to earth and the subtleties of its uncovering can be perused here .
As an individual aside, our contemplations are with the group of Mr. Glenn and we wish them only the hottest in understanding what an accomplished life he led.
